Home Help at Domestic Angels

Home Help is a flagship service at Domestic Angels which we are proud to provide. Home help is best described as taking the role of a surrogate relative, a person who visits regularly genuinely caring and thinking for the individual(s) concerned. Home helpers need confidence, communications skills and to be able to work together in a team. The service delivered by Domestic Angels is valued so highly that a competence assessment course has now been introduced awarding successful staff with a badge of confidence to further reassure the clients they visit.

Home help is so very much more than a visit or a domestic clean, it’s about subtle caring proactivity. Checking use by dates on refrigerated foods, taking a shopping delivery, doing the laundry, checking the calendar for birthdays, making a cuppa and, possibly of the greatest importance, having a chat.  Deb Broomfield leads the Christchurch team who have a special commitment to Home Help which is reflected in the feedback they receive and long-term relationships.  Gemma, daughter of a Christchurch client, wrote in to say ‘Thank you for your invaluable service. My Dad loves his Angel visits and keep him going. I honestly think my Dad would be in a worse state if it wasn’t for his Angel. I can’t thank you all enough for helping us. I know we pay for your service, but you really care and that is rare to find sometimes.’

Deb Broomfield, who leads the Christchurch team says ‘When I started as a franchisee in 2017, I had a passion to help the elderly as I could see the loneliness that was coming in our aging generation.  I have followed and believed in my passion and strive to make a difference to my elderly clients.  This truly gives me the sense that myself and my team are making a difference to many people’s life’s, which in my eyes makes my business both rewarding and successful.’

Staff selected to be assessed as Domestic Angels Home Helpers, understand what it is to be a companion, how to prioritise tasks and how to go the extra mile. They are Angels for a reason and wear their very deserved badge with pride.

If you would like to arrange a Domestic Angels Home Helper to visit you or a relative, call 01202 267350 or hello@domestic-angels.com today.

We’d like to introduce you to Angel Jenna, Mum of 3 and much appreciated Angel to many customers. You can see in this picture that Jenna is wearing a rather special apron, in fact, it is bespoke. Handmade by Jenna’s 12 year old, especially for Mum, how much prouder could a parent be? The apron is a credit to a 12 year old’s talents, a Mum’s great parenting and the family culture at Domestic Angels.

With schools closed, parents have become overnight home school teachers in all subjects for all ages. If that wasn’t challenging enough, they also have to be the fierce protectors of the health and well-being of everyone under their roofs in the face of the COVID-19 virus. Both challenges are more than a step up from the usual homework and loving care. Like parents across the country, our Angels are stepping up to the challenge along with their managers, our franchisees and the team at Head Office. We are very much in this together, we are family. This situation isn’t always fun but when it is, we want to celebrate those moments.

Now that we are adjusting to our new reality of staying at home as much as possible, the big challenge for all of us, staff and customers alike, is to maintain our physical, mental and emotional well-being. To help us, we invited Barbara Cox to give us a few pointers. Barbara is a Global Wellness Council Representative and award winning nutritionist so she knows a bit about well-being. We’d like to share some our video with you, our wider community and family. Please watch and share

Keeping our customers and staff safe is always important here at Domestic Angels. Now more than ever we are reinforcing our normal training and advice through a series of short videos. We’d like to share some of our efforts with you, our wider community and family. Please watch and share.

“A little bit more than handwashing, this video is taking personal hygiene at home just a little bit further to help us all out at these trying times.” Sam Acton, Domestic Angels.

Here at Domestic Angels we are doing everything we can think of to keep our staff and customers healthy, well and happy during these extraordinary times. This video is the 1st of 3 which we have asked our staff to watch to reinforce usual hygiene and the current centralised requests which we must all put into practice. We invite our wider Domestic Angels family to watch our videos too.

“We all know that at this trying time we have to think consciously and wash our hands far more often than perhaps we did before. That’s fine but are we washing our hands thoroughly? We’d like to introduce you to the experts of handwashing, the NHS.” Sam Acton, Domestic Angels

Mr and Mrs Best found themselves caught out by the impact of the Covid-19 virus as government recommendations stepped up. Mr Best of Westbourne, Poole, had vital doctors and hospital visits scheduled, essential for his health. Unable to drive himself and in need of a supportive arm to move between vehicles and buildings, attempts to secure a taxi or charitable service failed due to high demand leaving both Mr and Mrs Best distressed and desperate.

Their regular home help provider, Domestic Angels, made phone contact to routinely check in and immediately responded to the Bests dilemma by reaching out to their wider Angels family to provide the perfect solution. Mr Best thanked Domestic Angels by saying “you are absolutely marvellous and true Angels in disguise in our time of need and vulnerability, someone answered our prayers and sent Denise, who didn’t just assist getting me there and back but without her help in the doctors sorting out a problem I didn’t understand, I don’t know where I’d be. Your speedy response to my call this morning and quick assistance from your team, got me to the hospital and reassured Molly, my wife, I would be alright. We can’t thank you enough, you are true Angels”

Hazel Burnett, manager of Domestic Angels Bournemouth Central Parks recalls the event “We have been looking after Mr and Mrs Best for a while now and because of the current situation I am contacting my customers more often than usual to check they are ok and reassure them during this challenging time. Yesterday when I called the Bests, I was instantly able to call upon the wider Domestic Angels family to create the right solution. These are not services we are often asked about but are a total joy to provide.”

Domestic Angels, you and the next few weeks.

There is no avoiding it, we currently live in curious times. We are also all trying to make sense of directives from government and noise from the media, not always easy but I am sure, like us, you are looking to deploy your typically British spirit wherever possible.

You are probably swamped with ‘virus’ noise and we apologise for adding to this but we would really like to reassure you and clarify one or two matters.

*     What best practice has Domestic Angels put into place with their staff? – Angels have been asked to wash hands on arrival at all properties, to then put on gloves to be left at or binned (allows for customers preference of reusable/disposable gloves with reusable being treated at the end of service) at the property then wash hands before leaving. We recommend you should be doing the same at home, this may feel odd but necessary
*     What will happen if my Angel falls poorly? - Angels are all following guidelines regarding self-isolation. If this becomes necessary, your manager will be in contact with you to make alternative arrangements wherever possible and keep you informed of how your Angel is doing.
*     What happens if I develop symptoms and need to isolate? – please call your Manager straight away to suspend services during your period of isolation and to arrange any delivery/collection services during this time.
*     Are Domestic Angels considered to be an essential service? – Yes! We have been liaising with government agencies regarding continuing our services in the face of isolation. At this stage we have been reassured that our services, in particular for elderly and vulnerable folk, will be considered an essential service and will be allowed to continue on the proviso of hand washing (above) and self-isolation practices (below). Whilst we will be able to visit our customers under these conditions, like yourselves, we will not be able to visit our own relatives or friends. We know some of you are already considering suspending service to yourself or relatives, please give a thought as to what this actually will mean at the point that you cannot visit your relative but we could have done if we are still delivering service. Isolation is a terrible thing.
*     My place of work/office is empty for a few weeks whilst we work from home, can the Angels give it a really good clean? – Absolutely. Call your manager to put your office on our centralised ‘to do’ list

If you want to discuss any of the above please contact your manager, we will help in any way that we can. By working together, we will have a business at the end of this unusual experience, you will have the service you enjoy, and the Angels will have jobs. Please take care of yourselves.

The Keane Family story – inviting help into Mum’s home

Customers seek help from Domestic Angels for so very many reasons. Sometimes it is to seek help and support for an elderly relative, someone they care deeply about, this is a situation where the customer looks for the highest level of trust and communication.

Clare Keane found herself in this exact scenario when she googled local cleaners in Bournemouth and discovered Domestic Angels. “I was doing all my mother’s cleaning however working fulltime and running my own home started to become too much. Domestic Angels prevented me from becoming overworked and stressed. Without Hazel and her team life could possibly have been overwhelming.” Organising help in the home for someone else is a responsibility that shouldn’t be underestimated. We asked Clare if she would encourage other families/individuals to invite help into an elderly relatives’ home and why “Yes most definitely and especially Domestic Angels, who are a different cleaning service. I liked how our local manager Hazel described the thought and care that went into finding a suitable person for mum and how they would engage with mum whilst cleaning, listening, chatting.”

Hazel Burnett, local manager of Domestic Angels Bournemouth Central Parks remembers the first time she heard from Clare “I remember the familiar tale of how Clare had already been let down by 3 other companies before finding Domestic Angels. The initial request was for a deep clean to bring the home up to a manageable standard followed by regular visits. This is a classic scenario when relatives become overrun by life when commitments to their own family, own work and the needs of a loved relative. Luckily Clare made the decision to seek help before anyone had a ‘melt-down’ The Keane family made it easy for us to be successful and you cannot underestimate the happiness that everyone involved gets from a valued and successful relationship when helping in a home.”

Finally, Clare would like to say a special thank you to Hazel and the 2 Angels who helped at her Mother’s home, Dawn and Karen

Winners in the Elite Franchise Top 100 Franchises

Domestic Angels has begun this decade with a brand-new milestone with its debut entry into the Elite Franchise Top 100 franchise businesses for 2020. The home-based business has never been ‘ranked’ before as it was too new however, given that there are more than 900 franchise brands operating in the UK, the Angels team feel that that they have totally ‘smashed it’ with their debut ranking of 88th. Elite Franchise stated, ‘It’s only been 3 years since Domestic Angels spread their wings and became a franchise, but they are already flying high as a new entry in our list of the UK’s top 100. The judging process isn’t just about profitability or the scale of businesses, but also the support provided to franchisees, employees and the benefits they bring to the communities in which they operate. The businesses who have made it onto the Elite Franchise 2020 are truly exemplary.’

First franchisee through the doors, Deb Broomfield, says ‘This has given me an amazing business opportunity, but at the same time the ability to manage and spend time with my family.
Founder Samantha Acton proudly explains ‘We are still a home-based business and proud of it. Each franchisee enjoys personal and extensive support from the leadership team and business family allowing them to focus on their customers and staff.’

Samantha adds: ‘We are a values driven community with our customers, staff and franchisees all prioritising control of their time, lives and money either by having help in their homes or by helping in homes.’

This is a part-time, home-based franchise, providing a lot of employment and ensuring that franchisees can be the parents and relatives they need to be. We have work-life balanced nailed. It’s what makes all of us tick and puts a smile on our faces whilst we work.’

Winner of the Innovation Award 2019 at the SWiB Awards

On Friday 7th June, director of Domestic Angels Franchising Samantha Acton, was crowned the winner of the Innovation Award 2019 at the SWiB Awards. The award was given to reflect the innovative determination Sam has demonstrated in evolving and diversifying the business and in particular for the design and development of software which runs the back office of the franchise network. The software, described as a ‘smart diary’, is now available on the open market and known as Paxan Solutions.
“This recognition is overwhelming, I am very grateful. For me, it’s all about the team. The team who inspire me, allow my business creativity to flow and become reality. They not only allow me to be innovative, they energise me to be this way. Innovation underpins our disruptive evolution directly contributing to our communal success” says Sam.
The Franchise Partners at Domestic Angels are very much part of the winning formula in Sam’s eyes. Deb Broomfield, Franchise Partner Christchurch says “Winning this award is important to me as an individual as I feel personally proud to have joined such a successful growing company and be part of its continuing growth and strength.   It also is important for my business as it strengthens the brand name and installs a firm belief in what we do. It makes me feel inspired and gives me a sense of how hard work and dedication can be noticed and recognised.  It gives me the enthusiasm and courage to continue doing what I am doing and the excitement of what the future holds.”
Hazel Burnett, Franchise Partner Bournemouth Central Parks, commented “Being part of the Domestic Angels Group of Companies that is award winning in innovation is fabulous. We’re not a static business. We strive to move forwards in all areas enabling not just ourselves but others to grow and gain strength. This award is for the Angels, the management, the Franchise Partners and the wider team who work so hard in the background. We have all worked together to create what we do.”

We’re a Finalist for an Entrepreneur Award!

Samantha Acton, founder of Domestic Angels Franchising and Paxan, is a finalist in the Entrepreneur category of the Successful Women in Business Awards 2019. Fulfilling the criteria of demonstrating entrepreneurial excellence along with 4 other significant finalists, Sam is insistent that this award reflects more than her talents as an individual.
“This award is for my franchise partners, the Angels, the Domestic Angels customers, the Paxan team, my peer group and the endlessly supportive friends and family who surround me. Yes, I can demonstrate commitment, vision, perseverance and capacity for personal growth in bucket loads but it’s the people around me who inspire me and allow me to be entrepreneurial. This is their award, my thank you to all of them.”
“Judging the entrants for the Successful Women Entrepreneur Award was really difficult, but Sam Acton is a very worthy finalist and true Entrepreneur. I am looking forward to reading out the winner’s name on June 7th at the Awards ceremony” says Gill Donnell, founder of the Successful Women in Business network.
Sam’s entrepreneurial story began in 2002 when she launched Domestic Angels providing help in people’s homes developing a sophisticated and effective business model which endured and grew over the years. The business was eventually converted into a franchise model and boasts several successful territories enabling more people to have their own businesses and in turn create employment. To enable and ensure growth for Domestic Angels, Sam initiated the development of her own software which has become the backbone of the business. Known as Paxan and launched May 2019, the software solution is now available on the open market to benefit other businesses who need to reduce admin. The entrepreneurial story is continuing.

Actions Speak Louder than Words – Domestic Angels franchisee collaborates to buy 2nd territory

Just 18 months since purchasing her first Domestic Angels franchise territory, Debbie Broomfield has collaborated with husband Jamie to take over the long-established Southbourne, Dorset territory. After enjoying incredible success establishing and building the Christchurch territory, Broomfield’s strategic move to expand her Domestic Angels portfolio is proof that the management franchise model is a recipe for success.

When asked why she wanted to invest in a second territory, Debbie explained “My business is thriving and still continues to grow providing me with a very good income.  My husband has seen my success, so we started to talk about possibly buying another franchise to increase our territory to provide an income for both of us.  He has seen my passion in what I do and how it has worked for our family running my own business from home.  This has shown him the potential we have as a couple to purchase another franchise and make it work for both of us.”

The home-based management franchise is built on the award-winning Domestic Angels business model originally established in 2002 by Samantha Acton. The decision to franchise the model has allowed Acton and her innovative team to introduce a product to the franchise market which disrupts long held perceptions and beliefs. “Technology advances have not only enabled more people to work from home it also allows talented budding entrepreneurs to employ and manage teams within sophisticated businesses. The Domestic Angels model provides all of the component parts for these folk to enjoy swift success.”

Collaborating with Debbie, husband Jamie Broomfield provides the facts behind his decision to get involved with Domestic Angels “I could see from my wife’s experiences with running Domestic Angels Christchurch the huge potential of the business. It’s perfectly suited to service all types of customers from busy families to older customers requiring a bit of extra help. She even has contracts with some local schools! Taking on Southbourne to run alongside Christchurch was the obvious next step. We plan to grow it as well as Christchurch has grown providing an unrivalled service to the local area.”

If you would like to find out more about the Domestic Angels franchise opportunity, email franchise@domestic-angels.com or call 01202 267350.

We are an award finalist for 'Best Franchisor' at the BEST Business Women Awards

We are an award finalist for 'Best Franchisor' at the BEST Business Women Awards!!!

"I founded Domestic Angels in 2002 providing housework, home help and spring cleaning services into client’s private homes. Believing strongly that domestic cleaning staff deserve as much respect as any other worker, I employed my staff guaranteeing holiday pay, flexible hours arrangements, NI payments, insurance and all the bells which the industry so often doesn’t provide its workers due to being dominated by either the black market or businesses structured as agencies. The evolutionary years were not a smooth ride learning how to be an employer, a recruiter, a salesperson and how to deliver great customer service. In fact, every element of running a small business, including completing the monthly payroll on paper with pencil and rubber. Every bump taught me how to run the business better, to perfect processes, to introduce structure and grow, ultimately resulting in the National Venus Award 2013 for Home Based Business. This life event made me admit that I was, and still am, an entrepreneur and classically unemployable.

These days my industry is both domestic cleaning and the franchise sector, yet my passion is for the same reason, I give people their lives and time back. Our Angels help in homes freeing up time and energy in clients' lives – things like being able to do homework with the kids after a long day at work or using the very little pain free energy they have to be with friends. We offer our Angels the hours and security they need to honour their priorities as parents, carers or students. Our franchisees establish their own home-based businesses allowing the same indulgences. With more and more individuals seeking to establish their own businesses with these values, sharing the message that affordable, well-structured, accessible and proven franchise models are an excellent option is very important to UK PLC.

Domestic Angels Franchising provides a management franchise business that gives budding entrepreneurs their lives and time as well as a tried and tested business framework which they can succeed within with 100% support."

Maybe it’s time to consider an end of tenancy deep clean?

A group of students living together in one property for nine months of the academic year is going to take its toll. Even if you and your housemates are the Kim and Aggie of the university, the kind of traffic that runs through a property shared by, say, five people means things like bathrooms and carpets will have seen better days once summer arrives and those tenancies come to an end.

While wear and tear is an acceptable level of decline when it comes to end of tenancy inventories and a mere 1% of tenancies end up in official disputes, 57% of those that do cite cleaning as the cause of the face-off between landlord and tenant.

Essentially, a landlord would be within their rights to expect the property to be handed over in the same condition it was presented in at the start of the agreement.

So, if you were blown away by the level of spotlessness when you moved in, that’s the standard required when you move out. Not at all easy to achieve for DIYers, so maybe it’s time to consider an end of tenancy deep clean?

If there is a note in the tenancy agreement that states your landlord can use part of your deposit for professional cleaning should the property not be acceptable on check-out, you could be faced with losing more of your money than you bargained for.

Indeed, it can be cheaper to look at bringing in the pros prior to that final check-out inventory, avoiding any admin costs associated with landlords forking out for a deep clean.

Moreover, an invoice from a professional cleaning company confirming all the work that has been carried out will carry weight should there be any kind of dispute over the standard of the property at check-out.

Finally, on a personal level, most landlords will genuinely appreciate a student tenant bringing in a professional end of tenancy cleaner and that could mean a glowing reference ahead of the next academic year’s renting.

One in four people now employs a cleaner

According to a 2017 survey, one in four people now employs a cleaner. That’s quite something, we’re sure you’ll agree.

Gone are the days when having a cleaner was seen as a luxury reserved for wealthy homeowners - for many families, busy with work and life, it’s become a must-have monthly spend.

With that demand comes business success and Domestic Angels’ franchisees are experiencing that for themselves. It really is boom (or perhaps ‘broom’) time for the domestic cleaning industry.

As well as the financial rewards from becoming a Domestic Angels franchisee, the benefit to that much strived-for work / life balance are clear to see.

Our franchisees run their own diaries and manage their own time, meaning something like watching their child’s school sports day is not batted away with the age old ‘I can’t get the time off’ excuse. You can’t put a price on that.

The cleaning industry is worth £24billion a year to the UK economy - yes, £24billion! Who wouldn’t want a slice of that cake?

Contact franchise@domesticangels.com to find out how you can take control of your life and your income.

There was a time when having a cleaner meant one thing...

There was a time when having a cleaner meant one thing: You’d ‘made it’ and were now far too busy and rich to clean your own house!

That view brought with it a degree of difficultly for the home cleaning business and certainly limited our client base largely to the above.

Back in the 1970s, women in particular wouldn’t have dreamed of spending the family’s hard-earned money on hiring someone to clean their home. ‘We don’t need that! I’m perfectly capable of cleaning my own house’, or something along those lines would have been the stock response.

How times have changed!

While Domestic Angels caters for many high net worth individuals alongside our elderly clients, we have seen a rise in millennials yearning for our service.

Research by insurer Esure last year suggested more than half of all millennials were hiring cleaners because they were “too busy” to do it themselves.

And who can blame them? How can you criticise successful young people for wishing to spend their time ‘living’ rather than cleaning?

Life is for living, after all, and we all value our time perhaps more than we ever have before. Having a cleaner can provide that work/life balance we all strive for and, for Domestic Angels, this is part of our very fabric.

Indeed, our home-based management franchise, as well our cleaning and home help services, provides the opportunity to find that balance between working hard yet having enough time for the things that truly matter.

That’s what we stand for.

Contact franchise@domesticangels.com to find out more.
